PREPARATION
All pieces are cut from 1/8 " Baltic Birch except body of larger bee which is 3/4 "Pine. Use DecoArt All-Purpose Wood Sealer to seal pieces. Sand, tack and basecoat all pieces with Light Buttermilk. Let the initial basecoat dry, then sand, tack and re-base with a second, smooth, even coat of Light Buttermilk.
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Banners: Use a #12 Flat Shader or 3/4 " Wash/Glaze Brush, doubleloaded with Baby Pink and Light Buttermilk. Working horizontally with Baby Pink downward, create a l'ombre (shadowed) effect across the banners following the contour of the shape. A bit of Brush 'n Blend will help you get the soft broad graduation of color we want, from Lt. Buttermilk at the top to Pink at the bottom. Let dry. Float the lower pink edges with a soft float of Royal Fuchsia. Let dry. Float in the contour shadows on the bottom banner with Royal Fuchsia. Let dry. Edge the banners with Lavender using a #2 Script Liner/Scroller. While we, blend in a touch of Orchid on the highlight points of the borders. Let dry. Mix Orchid with Lt. Buttermilk (20/80) and add shine to the borders. The lettering is Antique Teal done with a #5/0 liner. The little hearts are Royal Fuchsia with Baby Pink highlights.
2. Bees: Add a soft coat of Pineapple on bodies, then float edges with Golden Straw (paint outward and float to center on both sides). Float the shadows on wings with Warm Neutral. Transfer pattern as needed. Add stripes and head, plus face details with Soft Black. I used the tip of a #5/0 Liner to do choppy, vertical strokes for "fuzzy " stripes and face details. Blush cheeks with Blush Flesh using a #2 round (fabric) Scrubber to create soft blush.
3. Floral Arch: Place puddles of Country Blue, Baby Pink and Lavender on your palette and mix with Faux Glazing Medium. Using a #2 Fan Brush, pick up transparent washes and dab randomly for a soft mottled , but not completely blended, array of color across the arch. Ignore the leaves for now. Add more of whatever color(s) you like most (pink, blue, lavender) to get the soft spring flower effect that feels right for you. Let dry completely and transfer pattern as needed.
|
Step A: With a #6 Flat Shader, using Brush 'n Blend, begin to shadow in flower shapes. First, use Lavender to edge of flower. Gloat from flower to shadow randomly across the banner. Then float in some flowers with Baby Pink and finally Country Blue. Let dry. |
|
|
Step B: With a #4 Flat Shader, base in some flower centers with faces using Golden Straw. Stipple centers of other flowers with a sprung #6 Flat Shader for a light "pollen " look. Let dry. |
|
|
Step C: Flower Faces: Blush with Blush Flesh as for bees. Float upper edge of center with Pineapple, lower edge with Honey Brown. Add face details with Soft Black using the tip of a fine liner or a fine-point permanent marker. Add highlights to petals of flowers where needed with Baby Blue on blue flowers, Lavender or Orchid on Lavender flowers and White Wash on Pink flowers. Add pollen dots on Lavender flowers with Pineapple, Blue flowers with White Wash or Light Buttermilk, and dots around flower faces with Titanium (Snow) White. Let dry. Doubleload a #2 or #4 Flat Shader with Antique Teal and Mint Julep Green, with light side up pull in leaves. Some will take single strokes, some double to get the proper effect. Let all dry completely. |

4. Bunny: Transfer pattern as needed. Float all shadows using a #8 Flat Shader double-loaded with Warm Neutral and Light Buttermilk; keeping darker side of brush t line where you need to push back for depth. Then flip the brush and softly float in the roundness on the opposite side. Reload frequently to get two distinct effects - one of depth and one of soft contouring. Let dry. Mix in a touch of Lt. Cinnamon with Warm Neutral to darken shadows and add detail lines (especially on face) as needed. Blush face, ears, paws, feet and tummy with Blush Flesh. I used a #8 round (fabric) Scrubber with the same technique used in stenciling - off-loading most of the paint, then applying to wood surface. The nose and inside of mouth are also Blush Flesh.
5. Bunny's Costume: Base in as follows: jacket - country Blue: shirt front and cuffs - Pineapple: bow - Baby Pink; and vest - Orchid. Let dry. Re-transfer pattern as needed. Float the jacket with soft shadow floats of Blue Violet, highlight with Baby Blue. Add "sparkle " dots with Baby Blue, Lt. Buttermilk and Titanium (Snow) White using a stylus. Float cuffs with shadows of Golden straw, highlight with White Wash. Let dry. For trim use Antique Teal, highlighted with Mint Julep Green as are the shirt buttons. Float bow with shadows of Royal Fuchsia, highlight with White Wash. Float vest with shadows of Lavender, highlight with Orchid plus Lt. Buttermilk (50/50). Add linework details with Dioxazine Purple. Buttons on vest are Golden Straw, highlighted with Pineapple and linework details added with Honey Brown.
Finishing Instructions:
Add linework details to flowers where needed with Dioxazine Purple and Blue Violet. Deepen shadows and add linework detail to Bunny's face with Soft Black. Shade nose and inside of mouth under teeth with Royal Fuchsia. I did the whiskers with a fine-point black permanent marker. Add sparkle to bee's wings (and any other area you like) with a Fan Brush lightly loaded with Heavenly Hues Starlight Crystal for a soft iridescent sparkle. Be sure to put on a smooth, even coat working so glitter is evenly dispersed. Varnish with Matte Varnish. I used pearl-ended stamens for antennae on bees. Assemble as shown with 20- gauge stovepipe wire.
